A Great Christmas Gift For Your Girlfriend
By Dr. George Karanastasis | December 22, 2007
This holiday season I decided to do things a bit different. Instead of getting my girlfriend gifts that are common (even a bit boring) I went ahead and adopted a kitten. She’s not a cat lover but she’s about to become one!
This little gray tabby kitten is the new addition to our family and if you’re stuck on finding a great gift for your girlfriend this Christmas, might I suggest you follow suit and get her a pet. Just look at how adorable he is (pictures were taken at the animal hospital a few weeks ago):

Now he just needs a name! Care to suggest one?

Um. I hate to break it to you, but even if this worked out well in your particular case (and honestly “She’s not a cat lover but she’s about to become one!” doesn’t sound positive at all) this is, generally speaking, really terrible advice. Just Google “getting pets as gifts” for why.

Um… thanks for “breaking it to me” JMann, however, they’ve become inseparable since day one.
Now, I do agree with you somewhat after coming across this article by following your advice to search Google:

A surprise pet gift can very well be a bad idea. However, this issue had been discussed for over a year (hence the success of the “gift”).

…
I would like to say that pets are not good gifts as the person you gave the pet to could decide they don’t like it anymore, especially if you just broke up with them.

That’s a very valid point Kareen. Hopefully in our case the it wouldn’t be an issue if we broke up (we’d actually be fighting over who gets to keep him!)
